This romantic 17th century coaching inn is situated in the rural countryside village of Barnby Moor near Retford Nottinghamshire and rose to fame and fortune in the days of stagecoaches and highwaymen. Today Ye Olde Bell offers the finest traditions of a fully refurbished country house hotel in extensive gardens – traditional log fires, comfy leather sofas and antiques are complemented with the modern comforts of power showers and fluffy duvets. The St Leger Bar & Bistro is at the heart of the hotel and offers guests an informal alternative to elegant dining in the oak panelled 1650 Restaurant. As a family run hotel great pride is taken by the fully professional team, who are always are willing to go that extra mile at all times.
Each one of the forty nine rooms has been individually styled by with great passion and enthusiasm, incorporating many original features such as oak beams and leaded windows. Restful shades from a traditional palette are enlivened by drapes, throws and cushions in an array of rich silks, damasks and contemporary fabrics. Bathrooms are bright and spacious with many featuring claw-footed roll topped tubs and double walk-in power showers ~ all with luxurious toiletries. All our rooms are equipped with a flatscreen TV, hairdryer and hospitality tray.
Accommodation is offered in various styles:
Classic Rooms - all individually decorated and superbly furnished. Many have period features and some are ‘cottagey’ in feel. All are equipped with power showers and a number have bathtubs too.
Superior Rooms - elegantly styled with sumptuous fabrics, antique furnishings and attractive artworks, our spacious Superior rooms are finished off with many personal touches. Many of these rooms have stand alone claw-footed roll topped bath tubs.
Suites - Each one of the three suites has a unique design and character. ‘The Bowness’, a romantic four-poster suite, has a medieval air with old gold and plush red chenille. ‘The Victoria’ is “Victorian Versace!”, whilst ‘The Lady Jane Suite’ is quietly elegant.
Dining here is sublime - Barnby Moor sits very neatly on the border of three counties, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, all of which contribute hugely to the British Table ~ the Bramley apple, Stilton cheese, Lincolnshire sausage, spring vegetables, prime beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Menus are drawn from the region’s rural heritage and our brigade concentrates on using quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods producing many classical and much-loved national dishes ~ our puddings are quite renowned! With so many farmers on the doorstep, anything other than locally sourced seasonal produce just doesn’t cut the mustard!
The St Leger bar with its log fire and racing memorabilia is a relaxing place where a little local banter over a hand-pulled Yorkshire ale can be enjoyed. Guests can choose either bistro-style dining in the St Leger or alternatively elegant dining in the oak-panelled 1650 Restaurant.
On the recreational front, the area has much to offer, Barnby Moor is on the edge of Sherwood Forest and the Dukeries ~ an area formerly comprising the estates of five Dukes. National Trust properties locally include the 4,000 acre park of Clumber, the Elizabethan House of Hardwick Hall and Southwell Workhouse. The magnificent Chatsworth Estate, English Heritage’s Roche Abbey, Lincoln Cathedral and Southwell Minster are each within an easy day’s touring. Yorkshire’s premier racecourse at Doncaster and Nottinghamshire’s all-weather course at Southwell are both less than half an hour away. Race days have been the highlight of the local social calendar for centuries and the excitement of a day at the races is hard to beat!
