Deddington is a village steeped in history dating back to an early settlement in the 6th or 7th century. Soon after the Norman Conquest Deddington castle was commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeaux (half brother to King William I). The vallum and earthworks of this castle can still be seen today at the castle grounds. In the 17th century during the civil war after The Battle of Cropredy which the Royalists just about won, King Charles I stayed at the Castle House and Piers Gaveston was imprisoned there. Today Deddington is the only parish in all England to be granted its own Coat of Arms (1994), and this can be seen on the wall of the Town Hall in the centre of the market place.
The area around Deddington has a wealth of recreational locations and many places of local interest. Typically, Blenheim Palace, Bicester Shopping Village, Broughton Castle, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Deddington Farmers Market, Oxford Botanic Gardens, Oxford Colleges, Oxford Story, Rye Hill Golf Course, Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle.
