Perfectly situated in Trefriw, near Betws-y-Coed on the northern edge of Snowdonia in North Wales and overlooking the lovely Conwy Valley, Yr Hafod (The Summer Dwelling in Welsh), was formerly a farmhouse and dates from the Middle Ages. This delightful country house style guest accommodation in Snowdonia is an ideal location for a relaxing break or holiday in North Wales.
The ground floor of Yr Hafod contains the residents lounge, bar and dining room. All the bedrooms are on the first floor. The lounge has a small alcove off it, is comfortably furnished, with a mixture of modern and antique furniture and having no television, it is a relaxing place for guests to unwind in. The bar is thought to have been the hall of the late medieval house, it has been fitted with antique oak wall panelling and has a small well stocked bar which has been made from Victorian chapel fittings. Together with some antiques, these features create a room of great character. The dining room is believed to have originally been a farm building. It contains a huge fireplace, which may have well been the farm's forge and is used in the winter months to burn logs.
There are six bedrooms, all of which are en-suite, and are individually decorated and furnished. A balcony surrounds most of the building, and all bedrooms have direct access onto it - a place to enjoy the sun and views, or even to listen to the sounds of the many owls in the surrounding trees and woodlands at night. Each of the six bedrooms is furnished individually and none are suitable as family rooms. Owners, Chris and Rosina have used many antiques to provide a character, which suits the age and style of the hotel. Each has been named after one the many lakes, which are such a feature of the hills above Trefriw. Each has those extra touches, flowers, sherry and fruit, that make a guest feel special, as well as the usual room facilities that guests expect. Mineral water and fresh milk are provided in a mini-fridge in each room.
Dining is taken in 'The Driven Goose' bistro bar and offers guests a delightful array of culinary delights. Chris is a restauranteur of some years experience having previously run two well known restaurants in his native Pembrokeshire. Chris draws inspiration from around the globe and, wherever possible, fuses those ideas with with the best of local ingredients, to produce a robust cuisine full of forthright flavours. Above all, he believes that the primary purpose of food is to satisfy the customer, not the ego of the chef. As an added bonus the restaurant is a gastronomic haven for those on a Gluten free diet as Chris is on one and the same! Changes are made to the dinner menu daily, so guests are not confronted with working their way through the same menu, yet offers choices on each course. Everything is prepared inhouse, even down to the bread used for breakfast. Breakfast includes speciality cured bacon, local sausages, and free range eggs (including our own duck eggs). Smoked haddock, kippers and smoked salmon are also available. All marmalades are homemade (2 kinds) and homemade sourdough breads are available.
Hafod is set in grounds that include an off road car park, and extend to some two and a half acres. The landscaped gardens are a perfect place to unwind at the end of the day, and the rhododendrens are particularly attractive in spring and early summer.
The village of Trefriw nestles into the north eastern edge of Snowdonia, an area full of lakes, woods and hills and which offers a great diversity of walking, from a gentle lakeside amble to the challenge of Carnedd Llewelyn, a mountain only a little lower than Snowdon. Mountain biking and horse riding is also well catered for in this area of Snowdonia.
For guests of a less active disposition, this is an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia and the rest of North Wales with Bodnant Gardens, Betws-y-Coed and Betws-y-Coed all within 15/20 minutes drive. Other attractions include the castles at Conwy, Caernarfon and Dolwyddelan, the steam railways of Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland Railway, and the Snowdon Mountain Railway, National Trust properties at Bodnant Gardens, Penrhryn Castle and Plas Newydd, and much, much more.
