With Appleby railway station situated on the famous Carlisle – Settle railway (only a few 100 yards away) the Royal Oak is that ideal stopping off point on any journey between England and Scotland by road or rail.

In summer perhaps you would like to dine outside at the front of the Inn overlooking St Michaels Church or watching the lamb's in the field opposite, the choice is yours the price the same, so is the service, excellent.

The Royal Oak is situated on the outskirts of Appleby in Westmorland, a beautiful market town nestled in the centre of the Eden Valley.
Appleby is steeped in history and has the River Eden flowing through its centre (a unique river as it actually flows north), this famous county town of Westmorland has its own castle owned and resided by the Nightingales with a genuine 10th century Norman keep. Its own town council and Mayor meet in the 16th century Moot Hall in the centre of the town square. Appleby has three churches, one of which is directly opposite the Royal Oak and the town has many excellent amenities including its own indoor 25metre swimming pool and gym, indoor sports centre and an excellent 18-hole golf course.
Appleby is world famous for its New Fair held in early June each year that attracts over 100,000 visitors over the weekend many of whom camp on fair hill on the outskirts of town. The town also holds a carnival in July and a superb agricultural show in August. Harness racing is extremely popular and holds meetings May Bank holiday weekend, June and again on the August Bank Holiday.
Appleby is becoming more and more popular with visitors as it is easily accessible off the M6 junction 38 or 40 and being just off the A66 and Appleby Station is on the Carlisle-Settle Railway line and a short drive from the Lake District. Although a town it still has that small village feel, this combined with excellent walks makes it the ideal place to stay overnight or for that short break.
