Harpenden House Hotel is a beautiful Grade II listed Georgian town house with a rich history set in the country Market Town of Harpenden. At the beginning of the 19th Century it was used as a 'School for young ladies' and subsequently it has been a private house and a convent for the Dominican Sisters.
Harpenden House Hotel has been operating as a hotel since 1970 and many of the original period features remain, including a large 18th Century fireplace in the Welcombe lounge. The majority of bedrooms are adjacent to the main house in the Garden and Hertfordshire Wing. Harpenden House Hotel has undergone a transformation with an investment in 2007/08 of over £2 million. The hotel is ideally located for access from M25, M1 and A1 and is just six miles from Luton Airport. The mainline train from Harpenden arrives in Kings Cross St Pancras in 20 minutes, giving access to Eurostar services. It is thus, perfect for a most enjoyable and relaxing break and as a convenient resting place for those travelling to and from the continent.
Accommodation is offered in a collection of seventy-six bedrooms with a range of modern comforts that will ensure you have a consistently comfortable stay in Harpenden. Each is furnished in a contemporary but warm style and offer a well equipped retreat at the end of a productive day. All rooms have a private bath or shower, TV, hairdryer, trouser press and tea and coffee making facilities. Two rooms are specifically designed for wheelchair and easy access.
In the main house, fourteen of the bedrooms have been totally renovated to provide every modern comfort of a four star hotel, whilst retaining the charm and character of the Grade II listed building. Dinner is taken in the magnificent Georgian Restaurant which boasts a renaissance style ceiling and new stylish décor. Here you can savour the beautiful surroundings, while enjoying the fine cuisine with a Mediterranean influence from the Head Chef, Alan Tarsey. An excellent wine selection will complete the dining experience by complementing the food with a variety of fine wines.
The Georgian Restaurant and Welcome Lounge & Bar have been updated and transformed by our design team, whilst retaining the original features of the house, they incorporate modern comforts, offering versatile options for formal or informal occasions of every size.

Hatfield House displays superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship in the form of beautifully carved wood and a rare stained glass window. The State Rooms are rich in famous paintings, fine furniture, tapestries and historic armour. The Hatfield House Garden is steeped in history and when it was first designed in the 17th Century, contained many plants and trees from Europe that had never previously been grown in England. In the garden can be found the Great Hall, the surviving wing of the Royal Palace of Hatfield (1485) where Elizabeth I spent some of her childhood. Hatfield House open from April to September.
For another cultural day out, head to Knebworth House where the Lytton family have lived at or 500 years. Knebworth House offers numerous historical connections including offering accommodation for Elizabeth 1, being the House where Charles Dickens acted in private theatricals and where Winston Churchill's painting of the Banqueting Hall hangs in the room where he painted it.
For a full day of family fun Whipsnade Wild Animal Park is one of Europe's largest wildlife conservation parks. In a beautiful setting of 600 acres of parkland, elevated on the Chiltern Hills, Whipsnade is home to over 2,500 animals including several endangered species.
Close by, St Albans has something for everyone from the Roman history and churches to pubs, markets and even ghostly happenings in the city's maginificent Abbey Church which dominates the sky line.
