All have Satellite TV, pay movies, radio, direct dial telephone, trouser press, hairdryer and a hospitality tray.
The hotel restaurant ‘Moonwaters’, offers spectacular views over Lake Windermere which makes it the perfect location to linger over the excellent modern European cuisine prepared by Head Chef Chris Taylor and his team, and to enjoy the selection of fine wines on offer. After dinner, the comfortable lounge offers an alternative place to retire and take in the beautiful lakeside scenery. Guests can enjoy the patio area in the summer months or in winter the homeliness of an open fire. The restaurant serves a large buffet breakfast each morning from 7.30am to 9.30am and a traditional three-course dinner menu served daily from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.
The hotel boasts a superb heated indoor swimming pool and a sauna, ideal for relaxing after a long day. There is also a snooker room and putting green within the six acres of beautiful gardens overlooking Lake Windermere and the Cumbrian Hills.
Bowness is a Victorian town that retains the air of gentility from that epoch, although being the number one destination in the Lakes it is bustling and busy through the year.
Particular attractions and legacies from the town’s heritage is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway running on a short stretch of the old line; and the ferry from the southern end of the town, running on cables beneath the water to take passengers to Sawrey, the elegant pier. The Lake dominates the town, a major draw for sailors (in Swallows and Amazons Bowness was “Rio”), canoeists, and all sorts of other craft, including steamers running up and down its waters. It is a magnet for fishermen too, well stocked with the usual coarse fish, but notable for its char, lurking deep beneath the surface. Potted char is a local delicacy here. All this is forgetting the beautiful country surrounding the town. It was here that Wainwright first experienced the Lakes, and Orrest Head, gained via a path from the town, was the first peak he climbed in the area in 1930. Those making the same ascent will look out from this viewpoint and realise why he fell in love with the country… and this quite splendid hotel!
