Nestled amongst the rolling countryside, the Bird in Hand Inn is a classic Cotswolds country inn located in Whiteoak Green, Oxfordshire, near Witney on the B4022, just outside of the small village of Hailey. This charming Cotswolds hotel is set in an ideal location in the heart of the country within a few miles of Oxford, Chipping Norton and major motorways
Surrounded by the beautiful scenery and rolling countryside of the Cotswolds, this Grade II listed building is made of traditional local stone and slate and boasts many charming original features.
Typical of the region, the Bird in Hand was originally constructed in the traditional manner in the 17th century. Today, the inn has been totally renovated, but is still rich in original charm and gorgeous period features, such as natural Cotswold stone and heavy wooden beams.
A large part of the Bird in Hand’s renovation work has centered around the bedrooms which offer the highest levels of contemporary modern luxury; Egyptian cotton bed linen, wall mounted plasma TV with Freeview channels and direct dial telephones are just a few of the amenities that these well furnished suites have to offer. Each of the rooms has its own unique, individual warmth and character. The oldest room is the heart of the hotel where a huge inglenook fireplace blazes away with enormous logs during the cold winter nights and during the hot summer season, the hearth is decorated with a display of local flowers.
Dining here is an inspirational experience with chef creating dishes that provide a delicious blend between gourmet and heartwarming comfort using only, wherever possible, local produced and ingredients. With excellent service, mouth-watering food, a distinctive wine list and a warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere, dining is a totally enjoyable and memorable experience!
The Inn is ideally suited as a base from which to discover the delights of the Cotswolds and surrounding areas. Whether a visit to the dreaming spires of Oxford, Blenheim Palace or touring the villages of the Cotswolds, the choice is yours. Witney is a thriving market town in West Oxfordshire, world famous for its blankets. The Bishop's Palace site situated near to the Church on Church Green dates from the 12th century. The archaeological remains of the great hall and other features were discovered in the early 1980s and are now exposed under a modern roof. The Witney Farmers' Market takes place on the third Wednesday of the month in the Market Place. Leisure facilities include Pilate Fitness, the Windrush Leisure Centre and Witney Lake and Meadows; a wildlife reserve is just beyond the town centre. The Witney and District Museum tells the story of Witney's history with an emphasis on the Blanket Industry. Nearby, Cogges Manor Farm Museum is a unique working museum set in an historic manor house and farm buildings. North Leigh Roman Villa remains can be found a short drive from Witney. Blenheim Palace, home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, is just eight miles away.
